Is co-op housing actually doubling?

ABC promised to double the number of co-operative housing units in Vancouver within four years. Here's how many co-op units have actually been completed each year, by occupancy year.

Behind

Co-op completions averaged 88 units/year since 2023, versus 195/year before — the registry now holds 6,215 co-op units.

1The story
What we're tracking An ABC Majority will double the number of co-operative (co-op) housing units in Vancouver within the next four years. — ABC Vancouver's 2022 campaign platform

In plain terms: Co-ops are resident-owned housing — cheaper than market rentals because no landlord takes a profit. Doubling them means adding thousands of homes. We count units in co-op projects marked Completed, grouped by the year they were occupied.

3The fine print
How we calculated this
From the City's Non-Market Housing registry: projects whose name contains 'co-op'/'coop' and status 'Completed', summed by occupancy year. Early years have sparse unit counts in the registry itself; we show what the city records.
